Proper Torso Position for the Overhead Press

Proper Torso Position is key for the overhead press. When performing the Overhead Press you must remember that the only parts of your body that should move during the exercise is your arms, head, hips and torso.
Here’s a video with one of the worlds best coaches Mark Rippetoe on the Overhead Press and how to position your torso properly under the bar.

By following Mark’s recommendations you must remember to:
- Lean back a little bit to allow the bar to go pass your face.
- Keep the bar as close to your face as possible.
- As soon as the bar is higher then your head you must get under the bar.
- Lock out.
In order to perform the overhead press properly you have to shift your torso forward to get under the bar. By following these tips you will avoid injuries especially in your lower back. Keep in mind to start with light weight until you perfect the overhead press technique.
