The benefits of fish oils, and EFA’S

These days some people are taking dieting way to seriously, not taking in any fats what so ever, but what a lot of people don’t know is that there are good fats, and bad fats. You find bad fats when products are cooked or made with artificial Tran’s fats, which are made from animal fats and these, should be kept to a minimum. However you also need what is called essential fatty acids which means we need these in order to live. They are broken down into two categories which are: Omega 6 EFA’s and Omega 3 EFA (essential fatty acid).

The main sources of omega 6 EFA’s are found in vegetable oils, such as corn and soy oils. While omega 3 EFA’s are found in flaxseed and walnut oils, along with fish such as salmon. Researchers first came to find out the benefits of these EFA’s in the 1970’s, when a study was done on the Greenland Eskimo’s and their diets. It was found that by eating a high amount of fish oils, along with a strict diet in low saturated and Trans fats that these people were living a longer and healthier lives then the rest of us. Some other huge benefits that EFA’s have been proven to help with according to researchers are:

– Prevention of heart disease, arthritis, cancer and depression.

– Treatm ent for diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis and also Reynaud’s disease.

Increase of healthy skin cells.

Helps strengthen hair for a nice glossy coat.

Increases your brain power with focus, and memory.

Studies say so

All over the world studies have been done to show the positive effects of fish oils and other EFA’s, one study from Italy of 11,000 heart attack survivors found that patients who started supplementing with fish oils juristically reduced the risk for a second heart attack or stroke.

Also found in an American study was that men who consumed either fish oil supplements, or a healthy fish meal once a week had a 50% lower risk of dying from a unforeseen cardiac event, then men who didn’t eat fish or did not take fish oil supplements fewer then once per month.

Can help stop tumour growth

Today there is even more evidence that consuming fish oils can delay or reduce tumour development in breast cancer. This is also true for preventing or slowing down the risk of colon cancer, along with improving the quality of life for people who are in the terminal stage of cancer. Another way to help fight all these situations is to get seen by your doctor on a regular basis, so that they can detect certain forms of cancer in the early stages where you have a better chance of beating, or stopping the cancer from spreading.

No reason not to help yourself

It is estimated that over 75% of people living in the western world are lacking the essential EFAs they need in their regular diet. People on a vegetarian diet need to beware of this as well because they tend to be too high in omega 6 fats. You also need to make sure you know what you are taking in a supplement if you choose to do so. Make sure your getting fish oils and not just cod liver oil, there is a number of different nutrients in both, such as with cod liver you’re getting more vitamin A and D, while with fish oils your main goal is to boost the amount of EPA, and DHA which are the most essential types of acids from oils.
