Anderson Silva To Reitre In 2009
UFC Middle weight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva went on a Brazilian radio station and announced he has plans to retire next year at the end of 2009. Silva who has been un-stoppable since coming into the octagon has won 8 fights in row spanning 2 years. The 33 year old Juggernaut has ran through opponents such as Rich “Ace” Franklin (twice), Dan Henderson, Chris Leben and James Irvin who was up a weight class on Anderson.
Some speculation why he wants to retire is to get Dana White to invest more money into his fight purses, he only collected $200,000 in his last fight against James Irvin while other fighters are supposedly making money near the half a million mark. This all coming after the Randy Couture holdout for which he wanted to make more money and fight who he wanted to.
Silva has also been restricted in what he can and can’t do with the UFC, he was trying to have a boxing match setup against Roy Jones Jr which Dana White came into and put a stop to before it even had a chance to be sanctioned.
Silva’s next fight comes against the Canadian fighter Patrick Cote who is not even in the same realm as Silva, personally I think this is just a waste of a pay per view, especially if he is hinting towards retiring. Dana White needs to get some kind of super fight setup with either GSP or Forrest Griffin to give Silva a real test of his Metal and after that if he really wants to walk away at the top of his game then so be it. There are a lot of un-answered questions that a lot of people including myself want answered about Silva and hopefully in 2009 we will get some, until then he is the pound for pound champ of MMA and nobody can say otherwise.
