Gary Sheffield Makes History
Sure it is clouded by many questions that MLB doesn’t want you to ask right now like “how many years were you on the juice, Gary?” But for right now lets just leave that door closed.
Sheffield started the game 0-4 with 3 walks before becoming the 25th major leaguer to join the 500 home run club, it was his first hit of the 2009 season and what a way to start things off! It was a full count 385 foot bomb right out of the park, then running the bases with camera flashes blinding everyone he ran up and gave teammate Jose Reyes a giant hug.
Here’s what Sheffield had to say about the home run:
“Just to join that 500 club, you know. Now I can say I’m in the club and, you know, it’s like getting your degree. Nobody can never take that away from you”
The ball was caught by 22 year old Chris Matcovich, a huge mets fan who gave the ball back to Sheffield in exchange for a few signed jerseys and pictures for him and his buddies. A few of Gary’s teammates were joking that he was going to have to pay $500,000 to get the ball back, but Sheffield was very gracious to the young man and was pleased how everything turned out.
Other members of the 5o0 home run club include:
- Barry Bonds
- Hank Aaron
- Babe Ruth
- Ken Griffey, Jr.
- Sammy Sosa
- Mark McGwire
- Alex Rodriguez
- Manny Ramírez
- and newest member Gary Sheffield
The Mets also beat the Brewers 5-4 in the game which was definitely overshadowed by the home run.
