What sports cars can you actually afford?

Submitted by on September 9, 2008 – 1:27 pm2 Comments

Sure we all see the dodge vipers or Ferrari F-50’s cruising around town in the summer and wish we could be behind the wheel but what chance does the average joe have for that? Not to good, However there are some pretty sweet rides out there for reasonable prices. Here’s the MG’s top 3 that you should take a look at:

Dodge Challenger

Nope not the Charger this baby is a 1970’s old fashioned American muscle car. After a 35 year hiatus the beast is back and looking really bad ass. Comes with limited colors right now and your best bet is to head over to a dodge dealer and check them out for yourself. The Spec’s on the Challenger include a 3.5L 250HP V6 engine that is powered by real wheel drive so you can still lay a nice strip after a stressful day at the office. The base model which is what I’m covering get’s about 18MPG in the city and a respectable 25MPG on the highway.

I took this out for a test drive to see what I thought about it and I must say you feel like a man in this car, cruising past regular folk in there Honda Hybrid’s and mini vans and it definitatley has some balls. One negative about this car is that is does chug back some gas, so you can’t be flooring it at every red light your at to test your metal, but if you take it nice and easy and just save the Macho stuff for the high school kids driving car’s with loud mufflers you will for sure love this car.

Price range is from $21,000 to $40,000 depending on how much horse power and torque you want pushing your ride.

Nissan 350Z

This sports car from Nissan is a little more on the pricey side starting at around $28,500 but you definatley get what you pay for. The 350Z will put you back in your seat while making you feel like your in total control with great steering and stability. Another great thing about the 350Z is that you can customize this baby to make it original from any others out there on the road. Spec’s include a 3.5L V6 engine giving you 306 HP which is just incredible, as for gas mileage it is pretty standard with every other sports car – you get 18MPG in the city and 25MPG on the highway. You can also get the Nissan 350Z in a convertible but this move will cost you about $8,000.

When I test drove the 350Z it was a lot of fun because of the standard transmission and the 306 HP was just unreal. It was a really comfortable ride because of the interior which was leather and very roomy. Also had a great standard stereo and cd deck all included. One thing I didn’t like to much was while I was out cruising around I saw about 3 other 350Z’s so the originality goes a little bit, but like I said before if you customize your car then that problem goes away.

Price Range is from $28,500 to $41,000 depeding on if you want a convertible and other bonuses like leather seats and paint color.

Mitsubishi Eclipse

The re-designed 2009 Eclipse is a small but very sporty car, you may remember it getting publicity from 2 fast 2 furious a few years ago but now this car is even sleeker and faster. The 2009 model was made to give it’s sister car the Lancer a healthy rivel but now it may just take over as the top seller for Mitsubishi. The Eclipse has a 2.4L Inline 4 engine that puts out 162HP which is pretty quick because of the small and light frame it has. The smaller car limits your passengers and you might have a hard time fitting your golf clubs in the back, but it does have a good gas mileage ratio. you get a soild 20MPG in the city and 28MPG on the highway. You can also upgrade this car to the GT spyder which has a sick 265HP engine which really does fly.

When I took the Eclipse on the road it felt like i was driving a really low sports car that had incredible turning and passing speed. You can accelerate by anyone in this car. The leg room is a little cramped if your over 6 foot so make sure you test drive this car a few times to make sure it isn’t to tight for you. That said I really did enjoy the car but if I was to buy one I would upgrade to the spyder to get the extra horse power and stylish look.

Price Range starts at $20,099 and can get upgraded to $28,999 for the spyder.
